The Early Learning Coalition of Flagler & Volusia Counties'
mission is to provide school readiness programs and funding assistance
for birth-to-kindergarten age children with the goal of increasing
their chances for education success. The Coalition recognizes that
a sound education begins with involving parents as their child's
first teacher and high quality school readiness services through
early education programs.
Family
Involvement Program
The Family
Involvement Home Visitation program is comprised of certified parent
educators who provide in home visitation services to school
readiness families. The main focus is on children birth to
four. The internationally recognized, Parents as Teachers
Curriculum, is used to provide effective, research based
knowledge to parents. The parent educators are trained to
translate scientific information on early brain development into
specific when, what how, and why advice for families. The
activities assist parents in reinforcing the concepts "learning
begins at home" and "parents are their child's first teacher".
This allows parents to recognize and capture those teachable moments
in everyday life to enhance their child's intellectual growth,
language development, social development and motor skills.
Participating
families will receive personal visits, participate in parent group
meetings and trainings, have access to developmental screenings for
their children, and are linked to community resources.
Specialized parent trainings on literacy, car seat safety, infant
massage, brain development, and language/reading are provided.
Independent evaluations have shown that parents who participate in
home visitation programs are more involved in their's child's
schooling, more confident in their role as parents and read to their
children more. Children who participate in these programs
typically score higher on kindergarten readiness tests, on
standardized test, on standardized measures of achievement in early
grades, and are significantly more developed in language, social,
problem solving and other cognitive abilities.
